Why Your Bleach Brushes Are Falling Apart (and How to Stop It)

Bleach painting is SO satisfying… until your brushes start fraying, shedding, or hardening into stiff little brooms. 😬 If you’ve ever had a favorite brush die after just one session, you’re definitely not alone. And no, it’s not because you’re doing anything wrong—it’s just that bleach is rough on most art tools.

Here’s what’s probably happening (and what you can start doing differently):

🧪 Natural bristles = nope. If your brush says it’s made with “hog hair,” “sable,” or “natural fibers,” bleach will destroy it in no time. It strips out all the natural oils and leaves the bristles dry, brittle, and unusable. Stick with synthetic bristles like nylon or polyester—they're way more resistant and hold up better to chemical exposure.

💸 Dollar store brushes? Risky. I get the appeal (and I’ve tried them too), but those ultra-cheap brushes often use weak glue, plastic ferrules, or low-grade bristles that bleach loves to eat through. Even if they work for one or two sessions, you’ll probably be picking out loose hairs from your design and replacing them constantly. Not ideal.

🚿 The #1 tip? Rinse immediately. Leaving bleach sitting in your brush—even for a few minutes—can do way more damage than you’d expect. The sooner you rinse and clean it out, the longer your brush will last.

That’s just the surface of it, though.

In the full tutorial inside the Bleach Painting Club, I go deep into:

  • Which brush brands have actually held up for me
  • Why some “splash-proof” or scented bleaches make things worse
  • What to clean your brushes with (and what not to)
  • Whether soaking them in hydrogen peroxide helps (spoiler: yes, but with a few rules)
  • How to condition your brushes so they stay soft and flexible

🎨 Basically, if you want your brushes to last more than a couple projects, you’ll want to give them a little TLC—and I’ll show you exactly how.
